Gertrude Made Dresses Have Arrived!

Three new beautiful dresses have arrived instore and online, made from the gorgeous Outback Wife series of fabric from Gertrude Made. This range of fabric has a really lovely back story and has been named after women who live in the Outback and their stories. Here is a little bit of the back story behind the range from Cathi, the lady behind Gertrude Made.

blog-OUTBACK-WIFE-MADE590

“Many of the old barkcloths I’ve sewn with over the years have had women’s names on the selvedge. I always wondered if they were the names of real women and if so, who were they?

So that, combined with my belief that the more good fortune one has, the more obligation one has to give back. I decided with this opportunity I would like to give back to my fellow rural women, here, and elsewhere, by raising awareness of the reality of living life on the land.

While social media has in some ways worked towards closing the gap between city and country, I feel in another it has widened it. Oftentimes I feel that social media depicts rural life in an overly ‘styled’ way, and leaves many city folk believing it’s a leisurely ‘lifestyle’. True, it’s a life filled with joyful moments and great beauty, but it’s also a life that requires courage, resilience and strength to face the countless challenges of environment and isolation.

I hope by bringing you these women’s stories, I can play a small part in providing some balance to that ‘styled’ country life perspective, because behind the food you eat and the fibre you wear, there are real people and these people have stories and lives that don’t need editing or styling to be inspirational.

They’re my reasons behind the naming.

To finally share this collection which has taken more than 18 months to create feels much like I imagine undressing in front of a room full of strangers would. I’m laying my heart out for everyone to see and being a private person, I feel quite emotional for it all. This collection says very much who I am.

I’m truly thankful to my rural ladies for sharing their stories with me and for allowing me to share them with you.”

Get ready to meet your new favourite dress! Aggie is the big sister to Agatha, which had the same cut-out keyhole back and shaped, fitted bodice, but was a sleeveless shape with lots of party potential. We wanted Aggie to be the grown up version of our favourite party dress, with a cute capped sleeve to give just that little bit more coverage and the same perfectly gathered knee length skirt which means she will lend herself to events as well as work and weekend fun! and of course, she has pockets!IMG_2956Penelope Dress – Outback Wife Kirstine Green

Penelope features two pockets at the front of the dress and and flattering cap sleeves. This style sits just above the knee, and is an Aline skirt shape. It always features a rounded boat neckline. This fun, classic shape looks great teamed with your favourite pair of sandals or clogs or perhaps stockings and boots for the colder days. Because of its fun and classic shape you can wear her on the weekend or even dress it up to wear to work! You are bound to stand out in the crowd in this dress – and you know we love that at Made590!

We are completely in love with this new range of fabric from Gertrude Made and think you’ll love it as much as we do!

NEW STOCK: LazyBones – Ava Cardigan

The beginning of the year always means exciting things when it comes to stock!

We’ve just had a delivery (we are reporting this in real time!) from our friends at Lazybones, in Northern NSW.

The ‘Ava’ is a lovely cropped cardigan made from 100% cotton which makes the feel of this extra soft and comfortable. She comes in two striking colours; Midnight Blue and Fern green.

Ava has a pointelle knit on the front bodice of the body, making her a lovely delicate knit to look at and with enough detail to add her to your favourites in the cardigan collection.

She has a 3/4 sleeve making her the perfect companion for the inbetween, seasons – great for throwing in your bag and light weight enough to travel with. In two neutral colours, she’ll be able to be matched back with many other colours and clothing companions. Perfect to wear with your favourite dress as she sits a little past your waist, finishing at the top of your hip creating a flattering line as she is a nice and streamlined cut. Great with tops and skirts, and blouses and pants. ‘Ava’ also has a crew neck line which makes it easier for layering underneath creating a ‘no fuss’ finish.

With lovely details to finish her off like wooden buttons, she is perfect for casual and dressier occasions.

Please note that she is a shorter length cardi, if you would like to wear her oversized, please consider going up the size as she is more a of fitted structure.

Hop online now to add her to the cardi section of your wardrobe, or pop instore to see us. We love visitors!

Happy Monday!

Get to Know the Designers at Made590!

You asked and we listened! We love all of our designers at Made590 and are super excited to start bringing you our Meet the Designers at Made590 interviews! First up is the lovely Sonia from Dandelyne.

D-Logo-7.1-sml-e1344563392197made 590-5Who are you & what is your brand name?

Hi … I’m Sonia Lyne of “dandelyne”

What do you create?

I create embroidered delights in a unique miniature embroidery hoop frame. My designs include cute little animals through to a celebration of colourful stitches and everything in between. They can be worn as brooches or necklaces.

How long have you had your business?

Nearly 2 years now … and I feel like it is still early days. Happy days!

made 590-4

What is your number one favourite thing about being a designer?

The feeling you get when an idea/visual comes to life … and it looks even better than you expected.

Who are your favourite designers/artists?

I swoon over Kirra Jamieson’s artwork – love love love.
made 590-3

What do you love most about having your own business?

Simply knowing that I am doing something that lights me up every day.

Where do you do your best work?

I work from a little space off the side of our lounge room. It is a great sun lit little space. I also tend to take over the kitchen table at times. For now it works perfectly.  I can be working and still be a part of the action with my 3 crazy boys. In saying that, I do also love night time stitching, when it’s quiet.

made 590-1

Would you like to share with us your pets and/or children?

I am surrounded by BOYS. 1 big … delicious bearded hubby, 3 small … high-spirited Phoenix and fearless Anderson (twins) and super cool Austin. We have a beautiful pooch named Falkor who is a dingo, whippet, kelpie cross. He is stunning and is named after the luck dragon in The Never Ending Story.

What is your favourite afternoon treat?

Honey on a crumpet … YUMMO!

What is your most prized possession?

The first little stitched piece that I ever did. It’s of a little, blond girl wearing a red dress, and holding a green umbrella. My mum bought it for me when I was 7, hoping it would be a project that would keep me busy for the entire holidays. I finished it in an hour … my love affair with embroidery began.
made 590-1-3

What has been your biggest challenge so far in relation to your business?

Managing my time. I always need more time, I dream about someone selling gift vouchers for extra time … now that would be awesome.

Are you Australian made and if so why is it important to stay Australian made?

Yes I am … including my little hoops. To be honest it just feels right. I want to continue producing my little hoops here, and hopefully one day soon, be able to employ some peeps to help make Dandelyne even bigger and better. This way I/we can proudly say they are Australian made when they hit other countries too.

made 590-1-2

What is your favourite music to listen to when you work?

On high rotation at the moment is Clare Bowditch, The XX, Florence and the machines, Beth Orton, Regina Spektor, ONCE soundtrack and my favourite tune at the moment is “In Your Hands” by Charlie Winston. It’s not on iTunes yet but you can check it out on YouTube.  It will honestly set you up for the day.

What is your favourite thing at made590 at the moment?
I am in love with the new Dolly Top in Navy Floral and I have been eyeing off the Ramona Reversible Dress – Kitchen Kitsch. They will be mine soon ^_^.
